Do you have an old wreath that needs a refresh? I thought you’d like to learn how to upgrade a spring wreath for your door since the spring season begins on March 20th.
I plan to use my colorful spring wreath for the upcoming season as well as into the summer months just like I did last year with my quick and easy bright floral wreath.
Actually, I used that particular front door wreath for 5 years! I’m definitely overdue for a new spring wreath change, especially using a new color scheme. Blue and yellow flowers won out this year.
This DIY spring wreath is an easy project and a great way to add pops of color and a touch of spring to your front porch.
HOW TO UPGRADE A SPRING WREATH FOR YOUR DOOR
SPRING WREATH BASE BEFORE UPDATING
This pitiful old wreath was once bright yellow and filled with lots and lots of blooms. Constant sun and a few wind storms were the culprits of its demise.
Yes, I saved it while most would toss it out for good, but I knew that it could once again be a proud, colorful spring wreath with some help. Okay, lots of help!
The good news is that it wasn’t that hard to achieve the new spring look. It just took brand new florals and some patience to make it beautiful again.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- variety of faux flowers
- fern green leaves bush
- greenery picks
- floral wire
- snips / wire cutters
- hot glue gun (Surebonder my fave)
- glue sticks
I purchased the faux florals and fern greenery leaves from Walmart. They are the Mainstays brand and labeled, Fern Bush, blue Snapdragon Bush and white Blossom Pick.
The forsythia stems and greenery were purchased last year on spring clearance from JoAnn’s.
HOW TO MAKE A DIY SPRING WREATH
STEP 1 – PREP THE OLD WREATH BASE
- Remove any bird nest materials.
- Use snips to cut off stems that no longer have flowers.
- Fluff existing forsythia floral stems.
STEP 2 – ADD THE FORSYTHIA FLOWER STEMS
I didn’t find the need for hot glue or floral wire for this step as the stems felt sturdy after placement. Your experience may be different.
- Snip and remove individual stems from the main forsythia stem
- I firmly inserted each stem into the willow wreath following the direction of the willow.
- I started on the left side and continued down and around.
- Continue counter clockwise as it’s easier to push the stems down instead of up.
STEP 3 – ADD THE FERN LEAVES
I advise not permanently attaching the leaves immediately after adding as you may need to adjust placement after the spring flowers are inserted. The hot glue and floral wire is step 5.
- Spread the leaves open on the fern bush and snip off a few.
- Begin inserting the leaves at the outer area of the wreath leaving an even amount of space between each one.
- The leaves may look too long after placement, but if you give them movement, as seen below, that will shorten the look.
STEP 4 – INSERT THE ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS AND FAUX GREENERY
You may find that some of the floral and greenery stems will need either hot glue and/or floral wire. This will be addressed in step 5.
- Spread apart all the flower stems on each bush, then snip off.
- I started adding the blue snapdragons first by firming inserting the stem among the willow springs and forsythia stems.
- The next additions were the white spring floral stems which were used to fill in sparse areas of the wreath.
- Lastly, the separated and cut greenery stems were firmly inserted.
Below, is a close-up photo of all the florals and greenery once they have been placed.
STEP 5 – APPLY HOT GLUE AND/OR FLORAL WIRE
Place the spring wreath back side up and determine which stems are loose and may require hot glue or floral wire. I found that some stems could just be pulled more from the back side to provide sturdy placement.
I ended up not needing any floral wire, but you probably should always have some on hand for any DIY wreaths you make just in case. Applying hot glue was all I used for a few stems where needed. Your experience may be different.
Now, I have a beautiful spring wreath to use the entire season and into the summer months, and you have learned how to upgrade a spring wreath for your door!
