Do you have an old wreath base that is in desperate need of an update? If so, then you’ve got to see my DIY front door fall wreath using sunflowers as the focal flowers.
This simple project is easily achievable even for a novice wreath maker.
I purchased a plain leaf wreath from Michael’s a few years ago and originally used it with some pretty plaid ribbon weaving through the autumn leaves, but over time it looked out of date and very blah.
To be able to reuse this leaf wreath ever again to display on my front door, I needed to give it a big revamp so I decided to add my favorite flower. I incorporated some vibrant sunflowers to make my “new” wreath!
Let me show you just how easy it is to update a plain wreath and give it amazing personality!
DIY FRONT DOOR FALL WREATH USING SUNFLOWERS
My wreath update idea is incredibly easy to do, just like it was for my spring floral wreath, and only required a purchase of 3 floral bunches.
Of course, you can alternatively search individual flower stem styles or floral picks. Many times I find that a greenery and floral bush combo can be more cost-effective.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- fall leaf wreath form
- 2 floral bushes with flowers and greenery
- 1 floral bush with berries and greenery
- small sunflowers in autumn colors
- scissors or wire cutters
- floral wire for hanger
The picture below shows you just how plain the wreath looked before I added some personality. It looks so boring doesn’t it?

EXTRA IDEAS FOR MAKING DIY FALL WREATHS
Besides using floral and berry bushes, which add a good variety of stem sizes, different shades of fall colors, and greenery, the following ideas give you more options for creating your fall wreath:
ONE – Use natural elements in your wreath, such as, pinecones, feathers, dried wheat stalks, or small sisal woodland animals.
TWO – Fall embellishments can also be added, for example, as seen in this autumn wreath with a cute scarecrow addition.
THREE – Attaching a sign in the center of wreaths is now a popular trend as seen in this colorful wreath with a welcome sign and hello fall sign attached to a wreath.
FOUR – Add finishing touches using fall-themed patterned ribbons or this gorgeous fall checked ribbon to make a pretty bow.
FIVE – Thrift stores are a good source for finding an old wreath form that can be stripped to use only the base or spruce it up with new seasonal additions.
HOW TO MAKE A FALL FRONT DOOR WREATH
STEP 1: PREPARE THE FLOWER AND BERRY STEMS
Cut the individual flower and berry stems off the bushes at the base.
Make like piles of each flower, greenery, and berry stems.
Push up the greenery on each stem so that it’s under each flower and berry.
STEP 2: BEGIN THE FLORAL AND BERRY STEM PLACEMENT
No hot glue is needed, just stick each stem in the grapevine base. Poke the stem around within the grapevine until it feels like it’s secure.
Start with the larger sunflowers and other large head flowers first and vary the placement around the wreath.
Next, choose the berry stems left in the like piles and place those, varying the placement around the flowers in the wreath.
Now, add the smallest sunflowers and any leftover greenery or florals to fill in any holes, or areas that are lacking fullness.
STEP 3. ADD WIRE HANGER
Attach a piece of florist wire around the wreath for hanging and you’re all done. Wrap the wire once or twice around the wreath, depending on the wire gauge you’re using, and twist the ends together.
Wasn’t my DIY front door fall wreath using sunflowers so quick and easy? I hope I’ve inspired you to take one of your own wreaths that needs refreshing and give it a new personality for your porch fall decor!
