Easy Dollar Tree Pot Holder Craft

Thanks for Sharing!

No Cricut? No problem! Let me show you my easy Dollar Tree pot holder craft that allows you to personalize with any fun, short quote using the old-fashioned way of transferring quotes.

I personalized my pot holders with the quotes, “Grillin’ and Chillin” and “Let’s Eat!” You’ll be able to download and print these sayings to make your own cute pot holders.

Pot holders are perfect to include in gift baskets because they fit in with a kitchen, cooking, and grilling themes.

I included today’s pot holders in my budget BBQ themed gift basket. It’s so cute!

HOW TO PAINT AND PERSONALIZE POT HOLDERS

The best kind of paint to use on your pot holders is multi-purpose craft paint. You’ll need to heat set your project afterwards using a cloth and iron. I used FolkArt Multi-Purpose paint which is my favorite paint to craft with.

1. DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE QUOTES

Free printable — Let’s Eat!

You’ll be cutting both of these phrases out so that the paper is easier to work with and to get an idea of placement. See photo below.

2. TRANSFER THE PHRASES TO THE POT HOLDERS

THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY TO TRANSFER WORDS:

  • print and cut the phrases out
  • use a white colored pencil and thoroughly color the back of each word
  • place the word on the pot holder with the white colored pencil side down
  • it helps to place something sturdy in the pot holder pocket, see red pot holder photo
  • hold the word in place with your fingers
  • use a bit of pressure with a pencil to trace over the outline and fill in each letter
  • your words are now transferred to your sign

I added a fork to my black pot holder to take up some of the empty space. I drew my own, but you can look at “” to choose one to print for yourself. Use the same transfer method described above.

3. PAINT OVER THE WHITE LETTERS AND DESIGN

I used a liner artist brush to outline the letters and then began to paint inside. You will need at least three coats of paint.

TIP: To get crisper lines on the letters, I turned the pot holder upside down for the 3rd coat to paint the letters the opposite way. I discovered this worked best when I was painting the second/black one.

4. ADD THE DOTTED BORDER

I used the eraser end of a new pencil to make my dots. Dip the eraser end to get a generous amount of paint and then dot onto the pot holder.

TIP: It’s easier to space the dots evenly if you first dot the corners of one side, then dot the middle, and space the rest of the dots accordingly. I didn’t do this on the first/red pot holder.

Aren’t you excited to know you can easily make these cute Dollar Tree pot holders yourself, even without owning a Cricut?!

Will you be giving them away as individual gifts or adding to gift baskets? Let me know in the comment section.

  1. These are adorable Allyson! Very clever how you transferred the letters and shapes! Such a fun item for a gift basket or just by themselves~ love it!

    1. Thank you, Jenna! If you gift them as individuals, they even look cute with a little something else stuck in the hand pocket like spices or recipe cards.

  2. Thanks so much for sharing this old fashion method, Allyson! I love that this method of transferring lettering doesn’t require any fancy cutting machines, etc. I refuse to spend money on something I might use just a few times. Especially if they’re costly! I have too many of them already! Your potholders look quite cool!

  3. How cute are these? I love the one for the grill as my husband always steals my pot holders and uses them outside. After seeing this I think he needs his own set. Great idea!!!!!
