DIY themed gifts are so much fun to plan, put together, and the best part, to shop for!
I think you’ll get some great inspiration to start your own barbecue gift basket by seeing what I purchased and included in my theme.
You’ll find a list of additional ideas for what you can put in a barbecue basket at the end of this post.

If you’d like to start delving into giving gifts with a theme, you can follow these 4 ways to build a themed gift which includes my insider tips.
You can also learn all the ins and outs from the best stores to budget shop for themed gifts that I take advantage of for finding great deals for my themed gifts.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A DIY BARBECUE BASKET?
1. SELECT THE MAIN GIFT AND BUILD AROUND THIS ITEM:
I chose a gourmet barbecue sauce to start my summer theme gift and then built the gift up using inexpensive items that were either purchased on sale or from the Dollar Tree.
For your convenience, I’ve included a link below if you’re interested in this particular sauce. It’s a popular southern sauce that’s made in North Carolina.

2. CHOOSE A BASKET TO FILL WITH YOUR GIFT ITEMS:
Dollar Tree has a great variety of baskets to choose from. My red basket was perfect for my black, red, white, and yellow color theme.
Depending on your budget, you can also find other types of baskets from craft stores that you can catch on sale.
VIEW THESE BASKET OPTIONS:
- Red Poly Container
- Yellow Plastic Basket with Black Handles
- Black and White Round Basket
- Tip – You can use any multiples for additional themed gift ideas
3. SHOP AT DOLLAR TREE FIRST FOR THE MOST BUDGET-FRIENDLY GIFTS:
Dollar Tree always has a cookout section before the summer season and they also carry similar items in their kitchen area year round. I thought the corn trays were really cute!

4. SHOP OTHER STORES FOR BARGAINS DURING THE SUMMER SALES:
Since I plan ahead for my theme gifts, I was able to find plastic paper plate holders and a nice gingham towel last year during a 90% off sale at Hobby Lobby.
MORE GIFT OPTIONS AND IDEAS:
- Yellow Paper Dinner Plates and Luncheon Napkins
- Black and White Kitchen Towels
- Fun BBQ Print Plastic Table Covers
- Red Fast Food Baskets
TIP: If you want to make more than one BBQ gift basket then you can buy in bulk and split up the items like the ones below.
5. ADD A HANDMADE ITEM TO THE THEME BASKET
I always like to add a personal item to my themed gifts if possible. I painted two Dollar Tree pot holders with cute sayings on them that you can copy to put in your basket.
If you don’t have the time to paint pot holders, you can write your favorite cookout recipes on recipe cards and tie them together with baker’s twine.
