DIY Door Hanger Craft Idea

Are you looking for a cute spring craft to make? I’ve got the perfect DIY door hanger craft idea you can make to brighten up a room in your home. Follow my tutorial to learn how you can create it yourself!

I picture blooming flowers when I think of spring weather. The brighter colored blooms are my favorites, like daffodils and tulips, so I just had to include some bright and pretty felt flowers to my craft project.

The felt flowers for your door hanger are super easy to create and they don’t require a cutting machine to make.

This spring craft idea is also budget-friendly, since it uses inexpensive felt and jean fabric from thrift store pants. No worries for breaking the bank to make this door knob hanger!

HOW TO MAKE A DIY DOOR HANGING PILLOW

I have provided instructions for two options on how to join the fabric to make the door hanger pillow:

  • OPTION 1 – SEWING MACHINE
  • OPTION 2 – USE HOT GLUE

OPTION 1 – SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1 – PREPARE THE FABRIC

Cut two 7×7 squares from a leg of the thrifted jeans.

STEP 2INSERT RIBBON

Place right sides together and insert ribbon (9.5 inches) in between the fabric squares.

The longest ribbon portion will be inside with some ribbon peaking out of the fabric pieces.

Place the ribbon 1.5 inch in from the outside edges and let it stick out 1/2 inch at the top.

STEP 3 – SEW THE FABRIC SQUARES TOGETHER

Pin the top and sides together and begin sewing a 1/4 inch seam on those 3 sides.

Leave a good portion open on the bottom. It needs to be large enough to turn inside out and easily insert the stuffing.

STEP 4 – TURN THE FABRIC SQUARE

Clip the corners and turn the square inside out.

Poke the 4 corners out using a pointy tool of choice.

Iron the seams to make a crisp square and press a 1/4 inch at the opening on the bottom.

STEP 5 – ADD STUFFING

Shred polyester stuffing with your fingers and make it evenly fluffy as best you can.

Begin pushing the stuffing into the corners of the pillow pocket and add more until it’s puffy, but not tightly stuffed.

OPTION 2 – HOT GLUE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Use regular scissors or pinking shears to cut two 7×7 squares from the leg of thrifted jeans.
  • Place wrong sides together and insert ribbon in between the fabric squares and pin in place.
  • MEASUREMENT of the ends should be inserted on the top inside 1 inch in from the outside edges.
  • Run a thin bead of hot glue in between the squares to join the edges, working in small areas at a time.
  • Leave a good portion open on the bottom. It needs to be large enough to easily insert the stuffing.
  • Insert the stuffing, following step 5, and close the bottom with hot glue.

HOW TO DECORATE A PILLOW DOOR HANGER WITH FLOWERS

There are tons of different kinds of felt flowers in Google land that can be made, and I’ll be showing you how you can make three kinds of the flowers to add to your door knob pillow. They are easy peasy!

STEP 1 – PREPARE THE FELT

Use an iron, on poly setting, to press back a portion of the felt.

The folds can be different widths, depending upon how large you want your flowers. My 3 are an average of 1-inch folds.

Evenly cut to make your folds and then press with an iron, on poly setting, to make creases.

STEP 2 – CUT THE FELT

STRAIGHT FRINGE:

Face the fold at the top and cut skinny strips. See picture below. Careful not to cut into the fold.

DIAGONAL FRINGE:

Face the fold at the top and cut diagonal strips. Do not cut into the fold.

STRAIGHT LOOPS:

Face the open side at the top and the fold at the bottom. Cut straight strips. Do not cut into the open edges.

STEP 3 – ROLL THE FELT

Begin the roll at the end and roll away from you.

Place a bead of hot glue (low setting) and roll tightly over the glue, while at the same time tightly holding the roll in place.

Keep the roll even on the straight edge while rolling.

STEP 4 – ATTACH THE FLOWERS

Apply hot glue on the entire rolled end that doesn’t have the fringe cuts.

Press onto your desired spot on the pillow and fluff the flowers.

STEP 5MAKE THE LEAVES

Draw leaf shapes on the dark and light green felt using a pen or marker. See picture below. The light green leaves are smaller than dark green ones.

Cut out and hot glue them to the denim and then you’re done!

  1. Adorable! I love making felt & paper flowers. I made all of my wedding bouquets (mine & my bridesmaids’, not multiple weddings lol) with paper & I love that I did because I still have them. A door hanger is such a cute alternative to a wreath. I’ll have to try it. It’s great going with you!
    XOXO,

    1. Thanks, Niki! I’ve done denim flowers, felt flowers, now on to the paper ones! That’s so neat that you made all the bouquets and you still have those special memories. 🙂

  2. Very clever, Allyson! I love how you used the jeans. I have a few pairs and some parts set aside for future projects…we should collaborate!

    1. Thank you, Ann! I’m with you… more projects to come from those left over seams and pockets. I might even get wild and crazy and use the zipper, too. LOL
