DIY DOLLAR TREE VALENTINE DOOR HANGER
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- wooden heart – Dollar Tree
- galvanized heart – Dollar Tree
- pack of small wood hearts – Dollar Tree
- 12×12 red gingham scrapbook paper
- 10 wooden beads
- denim fabric
- twine
- red and blue craft paint
- Mod Podge
- E-6000
- glue gun
- scissors
- artist paint brush
- foam brush
- pencil and paper
HOW TO MAKE A WOODEN VALENTINE DOOR HANGER
STEP 1 – PREPARE THE WOOD HEART AND SCRAPBOOK PAPER
Trace around the wooden heart shape on the scrapbook paper and cut out.
Apply an even coat of Mod Podge to the large wooden heart shape using a foam paint brush. Press and smooth with your hand.
Let it dry and apply a top coat of Mod Podge.
STEP 2 – MAKE THE DENIM HEART AND PAINT THE SMALL WOOD HEART
Trace around the galvanized heart on a piece of paper.
Sketch another heart inside the galvanized heart tracing, as seen below, and cut out the inner heart.
Using the paper template, trace around the heart onto the denim and then cut it out.
Fray the edges of the denim heart with your fingernail.
The small wood heart needs to be painted with red craft paint.
STEP 3 – ATTACH ALL THE HEARTS
GALVANIZED HEART:
Apply E-6000 glue on the raised areas of the heart on the back side.
I only applied it in various areas where it was going to actually touch the main heart.
Then apply hot glue to other raised areas.
Place a heavy item on top and allow enough time for the E-6000 glue to dry.
FABRIC HEART:
Lay the denim heart on top of the galvanized metal.
Begin slightly lifting the top corner of the denim and applying dabs of glue on random raised areas.
You don’t need to glue everywhere.
Don’t completely smooth out the heart while gluing, leave it a bit rumpled looking.
SMALL WOOD HEART:
Use hot glue to attach to the denim.
TWINE BOW:
Make a tiny twine bow and hot glue it over the hole in the heart.
STEP 4 – STAIN THE WOOD BEADS
Squirt about a tablespoon of blue craft paint and add a bit of water to a plastic bag.
Mix the two together and then add your wooden beads.
You can adjust the paint and water ratio as needed.
Roll the beads around until all are saturated. Place the beads on a surface to dry.
STEP 4 – PREPARE THE HANGER
String the beads on a piece of twine. Depending on the thickness of your twine, you may need to seal the ends to be able to get the twine through the bead hole.
I used Mod Podge to glue and twist the ends of my twine.
Determine the length you want your hanger to be when it’s hanging. Add an extra 2 inches for each side which needs to be glued down on the back side with hot glue.
Yay, the door hanger is now complete. I hope you’ll enjoy making your own Dollar Tree Valentine door hanger!

Thank you, Cecilia! I love the challenge of giving dollar store stuff some pizazz.
Looks great Allyson! This tells me that I need to go shopping at Dollar Tree soon before these wooden hearts are all gone. You did a great job on this project.
Thanks for the compliment, Donna! I went ahead and bought a slotted heart for next year, too. You never know when they will run out of something.
This brought a smile to my face Allyson, it’s so cute, bright and happy! I love how you used a bag to color your beads and how smart to use Mod Podge to secure the twine ends for easy threading! Love this beautiful cheerful heart!
Thanks, Jenna! I’m so happy you like my door hanger. The Mod Podge worked well since I was working with a thicker kind of twine.
Super cute! I love the red and blue jean combo. Thanks for sharing Allyson.
Glad you like my heart, Terrie! I always seem to be drawn towards using denim in a lot of my crafts and it worked well with the red.
Such a cool and whimsy idea for Valentine’s decor, Allyson! I have that wood heart from the dollar store! It’s amazing what can be made with items from there! You created quite a lovely door hanger for the season!
Gail, so glad you like my Valentine heart! I also bought the slotted heart that I’ll save for a craft next year. Maybe I’ll use a pink color scheme for that one.
Such a fun way to refresh holiday decor! Love the gingham/denim combo.
Thank you, Sara! I was happy with how the combo turned out, also. Thanks for hosting a fun hop!
Very pretty, Allyson. I can see this hanging in a Country Kitchen!
Thanks, Ann! I just had to include ‘our’ denim in the craft ~ love me some denim.
