I came across a grapevine star wreath at a thrift store and even though it was a little ragged looking, I knew it would be easy to re-wrap with jute and turn it into a fresh, new patriotic star shaped wreath DIY project.
Decorating this type of wreath is super easy and quick to make! It’s basically just pulling apart some flower buds and leaves, cutting some ribbon, and hot glueing everything on the wreath. Follow along to get the visual idea for how to make.

- geranium floral bush ~ Walmart
- buttercup floral bush ~ Walmart
- Offray navy ribbon ~ Walmart
- Surebonder glue gun
- scissors
- natural jute cord
HOW TO MAKE A PATRIOTIC WREATH
I needed to remove the old twine at the joints and re-wrap with fresh jute since my star wreath came from a thrift store.
1 – PREP THE FLOWERS AND RIBBON
Pull geranium and buttercup roses off of their stems as seen in picture below.
Pull the leaves off of the buttercup rose stems. The 3 leaves on each stem are connected together and will rip a bit after pulling hard, but you can just trim the ragged edges at the leaf base.
Cut the blue ribbon in half, lengthwise, and make long strips.
2 – TIE ON THE RIBBON STRIPS
On each star point, find where there’s enough room to insert the ribbon and tie it on.
You will be tying the ribbon around one individual grapevine stem.
Each star point should allow for at least one to two ribbon strips if similar to mine. Leave enough ribbon ends peeking out to be seen. Then cut each end at an angle.
3 – GLUE ON FLOWERS AND LEAVES
Randomly use hot glue to attach the flowers and leaves, varying the placement at each star point.
4 – ATTACH A HANGER
Use hot glue to attach a jute hanger on the back side of the star wreath as seen in picture below.
If there’s room, you can slip the jute hanger under the jute wrap like I did, but if not, just glue on top.
See, I told you this wreath was super easy and quick to make. I hope you have gotten the inspiration to make your own patriotic star shape wreath!

My pinterest pins used for inspiration are here and here. I improvised some since my star shaped wreath is open and doesn’t have a background to attach anything.

Thank you, Mel! Glad you like my star wreath. 🙂
I love this Allyson! Super cute! Where did you find the grapevine wreath?
Thanks, Jenna! I found the star wreath at a thrift store.
This is so adorable, Allyson! You really lucked up finding this grapevine star wreath at a thrift store! I’ve been looking for grapevine wreaths, too! It’s so versatile to design for so many different occasions. And grapevine anything is quite popular and trendy now!
Yes, Gail, I did luck up! I don’t remember ever seeing a star grapevine at craft stores. Maybe they get purchased quickly and I’ve missed out.
This project is perfect for summer and the upcoming patriotic holidays, Allyson. Love the blue ribbon!
Ann, I think I should have used more of that blue ribbon. When I said red, white and blue to my husband, he said “where’s the blue?” Argh!
What a lovely refresh of a sad looking star wreath! It was just crying out for a bit of tlc and the star shape makes it perfect for a red, white and blue makeover! I love a craft that is pretty, easy and saves something from being thrown away 🙂
Thanks, Julie! Yes, the star was definitely so sad looking ~ lol.
