I reached way back into my childhood memories to create a tutorial for making easy abstract heart art for kids because I was itching to break open my new package of Sharpie markers and color something. I love Sharpie markers!
I decided to use my favorite art style and contain it within heart shapes. I’m showing you two options for how you can show off your artwork
- Add colorful heart art to white treat bags.
- Color an abstract heart and frame it with a DIY mat.
Creating meandering loops for abstract art is super easy, and the best part is you don’t have to worry about making any mistakes because anything goes!
EASY ABSTRACT HEART ART FOR KIDS

As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Sharpie markers
- Pencil
- Scissors
- (1) 3-pack of white gift bags (Dollar Tree)
- 8 x 8 black frame (Walmart)
- 1 sheet of patterned or solid cardstock
I started by coloring hearts on small white gift bags to make some Valentine’s Day treat bags, but I had such a relaxing time using my markers that I ended up creating a second heart to place in a frame. I’ll show you how to make both!
OPTION 1 – MAKE GIFT BAGS
You can find white gift bags at the Dollar Tree for $1.25 per pack . Crayola and off-brand markers can be reasonably priced. I used my favorite Sharpie markers, but I was able to purchase mine during a Black Friday sale for really cheap.
OPTION 2 – FRAME WITH A DIY MAT
I purchased my black frame at Walmart for less than $3.00. (Update: prices may have increased) Individual scrapbook pages can be purchased on sale at craft stores, like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

HOW TO DRAW AND COLOR ABSTRACT HEARTS
STEP 1 – Make a template by drawing a heart on a piece of card stock.

STEP 2 – Fold the heart with back sides together. While holding the back sides together, cut out following your pencil marks. Now it is identical on each side.
STEP 3 – Position the template on top of the bag and trace around the shape.
STEP 4 – Randomly draw loops and swirls within your shape.

STEP 5 – Choose your color scheme and color away!
STEP 6 – Outline the entire heart design in black.
Now you’re ready to fill your bags with lots of candy and top with tissue paper!
TIP: Instead of markers you can use crayons or colored pencils. I’m just very partial to the color saturation of Sharpies.

HOW TO FRAME ABSTRACT HEART ART
I created this second art idea as another example so you could see how the design would look being matted and framed. The 8 x 8 square frame is perfect for a heart shape.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DRAWING AND COLORING HEART ART
- Cut an 8 X 8 square from white card stock.
- Use the same heart template as used for the treat bags.
- Center your heart on your square and trace around the heart.
- Draw your swirls and loops within the heart.
- Color and outline.

HOW TO MAKE THE FRAME MAT
Take the frame apart and use the existing white mat as a template.
Place the mat on your patterned or solid card stock and trace around the outside and inside of the mat then cut out your new mat.
Put all the frame pieces back together including your art and you’re ready to hang your masterpiece.
Now your children can spend hours letting their imagination flourish creating their masterpieces! Do you think your kids will enjoy making this simple abstract heart art?
