Today, I’ll be showing you some creative DIY flower garden sign ideas that are easy to make. I’ve listed 5 variations for making a cute garden sign that incorporate other unique designs.
DIY garden signs, like mine, are a fun way to add a touch of whimsy to an outdoor space, like a covered front porch or screened in porch. You could also hang this cute sign in your potting shed if you’re lucky enough to have one.
While you can always make a wooden garden sign specifically made to survive the outdoor elements, I wanted to instead create an extra unique piece using a display of hanging garden-themed items.

HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER GARDEN SIGN
FIRST OPTIONAL STEP:
This flower garden sign will still be cute even if you don’t have access to a jigsaw to cut and make a picket fence.
I chose to cut my wood sign to mimic a white picket fence. You can cut boards using a jig saw to accomplish this look. Be sure you make a paper template so angles measure the same once cut. Sand the cut edges.
STEP 1 – PAINT AND MOD PODGE THE SLATTED WOOD SIGN
I was out of regular white paint so I used chalk paint. To make it spread faster and easier, I lightly wet the wood surface using a mister spray bottle.
Once the paint is completely dry, apply a coat of Mod Podge with a sponge brush.
STEP 2 – BASE COAT AND PAINT THE GARDEN WORD
Use white acrylic paint to base coat the garden word cutout. Choose coordinating colors from your gardening gloves to paint the word, bird, and watering can.
OPTIONAL PAINTING STEP:
At this point you can add some light and dark shading to the bird and watering can if you choose to do so like I did.
STEP 3 – APPLY MOD PODGE TO THE PAINTED WORD
Use a sponge brush to apply Mod Podge once the word cutout is completely dry. Mod Podge goes on white but dries clear.
STEP 4 – “STAIN” THE CLOTHESPINS
Mix craft paint and water together to make a stain, so to speak. Brush the mixture on to give the clothespins a color similar to the jute string.
If you don’t mix enough water with the paint and it looks too painted, you can wipe the clothespin off with a paper towel to lighten up the color.
STEP 5 – GLUE ON THE GARDEN WORD CUTOUT
Run a bead of clear Gorilla Glue along the back side of all letters of the garden word. I placed 3 heavy items on the word cutout and let it dry for several hours.
Although hot glue will work, it will probably pop off at some point and time down the road. That happened on another sign I made a while back so I recommend a stronger glue.
STEP 6 – ATTACH THE JUTE ROPE
Place a piece of tape on a, longer than needed, piece of thin jute rope where you think would be a good height to hang your items. I used painter’s tape.
Attach the garden items with clothespins to the jute to see if the height selected needs to go up or down.
Once the jute placement is determined, use a ruler to evenly align the jute rope on each side.
Once the best height position is selected, tie knots on the ends and shred the tail of each knot.
For this step a dab of hot glue should work fine, but I used a dab of clear Gorilla Glue on the back of the knot. Place heavy items on top of the knots and wait for the glue to dry before hanging your garden gloves and seed packets for good.
STEP 7 – PIN ON THE GLOVES AND FLOWER SEED PACKETS
Now, step back and admire your flower garden sign. I think this DIY idea turned out adorable, don’t you? It really is such an easy DIY and fun project to make!
5 MORE CREATIVE WAYS TO MAKE GARDEN SIGNS:
Try the following ideas if you’re unable to find a slatted wood sign and/or garden word like I used:
ONE – You can make a similar sign by purchasing a solid wood surface instead of a slatted one. Hobby Lobby stocks unfinished wood pieces that you can choose in different sizes and shapes to create a garden sign.
TWO – Consider using a garden-themed stencil painted on a square or rectangle wood sign. Adjust the number of hanging garden decorations according to the sign size.

FOUR – Another great idea is to change out the flower seed packets for a herb garden or vegetable garden theme using those seed packets
FIVE – You can paint individual wooden letters to spell out “garden.” Unfinished wood letters come in different sizes that should fit whatever sign size your choose. The size of my garden word cutout is 3 inches tall.
